Teddy...What are you DOING!? (TG33 Review)

June 13, 2008

Just my humble review of the new TG33 songs...

Let's start off this post by saying I'd like to consider myself one of Teddy Geiger's biggest fans. I've waited in line for hours for all of his concerts, own all of his music (released and not), and have a signed picture of him on my dresser. Before TG33, I have never met one of his songs I didn't fall in love with...but that has all changed. What the heck is going on with these new songs!? What happened to the heartfelt, beautiful, (mostly) acoustic songs from live shows and Underage Thinking? GAHH.

What makes Teddy Geiger's songs so beautiful is the raw, deep, intense, acoustic feeling. In a ton of the TG33 songs, they have been so overproduced with psycho intros, strings so loud you can't even attempt to hear anything else, spasmic xylophones, and aetherial "ahh"s that are better off at a health spa- not Teddy Geiger's new album. And the most upsetting part is that the songs are GOOD (Teddy's still a lyrical and musical genius), but this overproduction make them horrible.

Take songs that people have has access to for years, such as "Stars and Clouds" and "Crushed". I instantly fell in love with these songs and couldn't wait to hear a studio version of them- I've been waiting years! TG33 ruined these for me. I'm sure many would agree with me that the piano on the unofficial version of "Crushed" is simply mind blowing..where is it on TG33? Oh wait, it's completely covered up by weird orchestral sounds, I forgot! First this happened on "Our Eyes", (the acoustic on Look Where We Are Now, then the over produced chorus on Snow Blankets the Night), and now its come back to haunt me.

I'm not going to go completely into it here but I have a major problem with "Dandelion" as well. The range is not right at all for Teddy's voice and he sounds strained the whole time. And what's up with "Always out to Get Us"?! Get rid of the scary demonic children singing! Okay, maybe that's a bit of an overstatement, but still. Come ON now. "Money Back" is a complete joke.

Now don't get me wrong...the whole album isn't crap- not by a long shot. There are, thank god, some amazing songs that assure me that Teddy hasn't gone crazy and my 30 bucks was worth it. These include, but are not limited to, "Torn Photograph", "Have We Met Before", and of course the classic, "Better Now". But I, unlike some people, actually consider a fraction of 30 great Teddy songs worth that much money.

So please tell me, am I simply dillusional? Or were a lot of the songs on TG33 overproduced and extremely depressing?

Keep in mind I do love Teddy and his music...TG33 just has some flaws. From watching performances of these new songs (Always Out to Get Us, etc.), I was ecstatically waiting for this release, and, needless to say, I was somewhat disappointed. See you on the 23rd, Teddy, and I just hope if you play these new songs you play them how they were meant to be, acoustic (or at least without bad special effects).

I agree! I first became a fan of Teddy's music when I saw him play in his high school band a few years ago. When his cds first came out, I fell in love with every song right away. Everything was so raw and impressive with the meaningful lyrics and acoustic sound. Listening to the songs on TG33, I was definitely disappointed. Pretty much all of the songs are overproduced and that takes away from the meanings behind each one. I was excited to hear some of his new stuff, but I am surprised that "Better Now" is still my favorite even though I first heard that two years ago. I agree that "Torn Photograph" is another one that is proof Teddy hasn't completely lost it. I am just looking forward to hearing some of these live in concert next week, and hopefully that will change my opinion for some, if not all, of the new tracks.

I sooo agree with your thing about Dandelion, I couldn't even finish the song, and Always Out To Get Us would be sooo much better with out the other singing, and I don't understand why it has such a long ending, but I agree with meggs, I couldn't stand money back when i first heard it, but im starting to like it now. I think that the whole album sounds like they just had fun in the studio and wanted to see how much they can add to it

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean about warming up to songs, but incredibly inspirational (I totally agree) and/or "heroic" he is, there's no way I could ever like the song "Money Back". About the whole perfect thing...I definitely think you're right. The way that the acoustic/live versions of his songs aren't perfect at all is what makes them so amazing..they just shouldn't be overdone.

The first time I heard "Money Back", I hated it..But now I love it. For me Teddy's music is perfect even if it's not (I know that sounds like it makes no sense), but he's my inspiration and hero, anything he writes/plays I LOVE! But I know where your coming from. You just need to warm up to them, that's what I did and now I think every song is made to perfection!
